Christmas celebration

So the snow is not real good at the moment but......wait for Tuesday and Wednesday. Big snow storm coming in. hopefully we will pick up a desperately needed 20cm and to very low levels. We may even get snow in Erica Again.

The good news for today is that there is still plenty to da at Baw Baw. They are celebrating Christmas in July with giveaways, Santa sightings and kids activities. They have also set up a temporary toboggan run at the bottom of Hut Run ensuring the little ones have somewhere to enjoy the toboggans.

Skiing and boarding is really only suitable to beginners on Tank Hill to tower 1 and magic carpet.

St Gwinear is a beautiful spot to have a walk today but don't expect to see any snow at the carpark. Dedicated walkers yesterday found some patches up around the summit but not enough to toboggan or make a decent snow man :-(

Christmas in July

Thats right, the jolly fat man will be out and about at Baw Baw today handing out Christmas cheer to all the kids big and small. Lots of celebrations happening across the village with face painting, and kids activities.

Baw Baw has opened up Hut run for tobogganing so enough snow for people to grab a toboggan and go crazy. Tank Hill is open to tower 1 for limited skiing and boarding most suited to beginners.

Snowplay is good in areas open so if you get up the hills a bit you will find a quiet spot to make a snow angel.

St Gwinear has ZERO snow.

PLEASE check webcams at Baw Baw before making the journey

Rain and snow perhaps

So Ive waken up to rain on the roof again which is normally a good thig as it means there is snow in the mountains, unfortunately it is still too warm so it is falling as rain up top as well. Another degree colder and we would be doing the happy dance.

Baw Baw is hanging in still and expects to be able to offer tobogganing and skiing/ boarding for beginners on 2 lifts until thenext snow fall. They are shovelling like mad to maintain some snow so as not to cancel lessons etc and to give you a little bit to play with.

It was unanimous yesterday amongst customers that there is still enough to have a play with the kids and that is the best feedback I can provide. Please check webcams at Baw Baw before making the trip though and make your decision before you drive up here.

St Gwinear has NO SNOW at all. Poor conditions for skiing at elevation but may be worth grabbing some snow shoes for a hike

Optimistic

Sooooo yesterday was not a good day for anyone in Australia. All the resorts got a dumping of rain. Perhaps I am the only one honest enough to say it though. Baw Baw and St G took a big hit. Total snow dropped at Baw Baw from 25cm to 18cm in the man made areas. They are still holding it together with natural snow in between with up to 15cm of natural snow. I am still optimistic that they will get through to next weeks snow storm with the addition of some more man made stuff to top it up. Overall resort rating is poor but lots of people still enjoyed conditions yesterday in the rain.

St Gwinear is a sad tale at the moment. Parks staff and the food van have pulled out due to NO SNOW. There isn't any left. Can not be seen from the car park. We expect there may be a very poor cover at elevation but perhaps best to leave the skis at home and grab some snow shoes if you don't mind a hike to get there.

Missed out

Conditions were not favourable last night with temps a degree too warm. This resulted in a much smaller total than hoped.

Baw Baw picked up 3cm (happy to take that) while St Gwinear likely just got 40mm of rain.

Baw Baw reports 18cm of natural snow and 23cm of man made. 3/7 lifts running and poor skiing. Beginners are still going to love the day as reported by lots of return customers yesterday.

St Gwinear is unlikely to have more than a patch of ice at the car park but hopefully picked up a little snow at elevation for the skiers amongst us.

Have a great day and check out our Faceache page for regular updates

Hanging in there

Mount Baw Baw claims an average snow depth of 18cm across the resort with 23cm in man made areas. Tobogganing and snow play is rated fair to good. Skiing and boarding is poor but will satisfy the beginner with 3 lifts operating.

St Gwinear has closed its toboggan runs until further snow and x country skiing is fair at best. Patchy snow at the car park with better cover up the walking trail. Please note you are NOT allowed to walk on the skiing trails as it causes damage to the snow which can be dangerous for skiers.

St Gwinear

St Gwinear toboggan runs are CLOSED due to lack of snow on them. Very muddy conditions at the car park. Still enough snow for snowplay and skiing further up but no tobogganing until further snow expected tomorrow and throughout the week.

Baw Baw has been able to make snow and their toboggan runs are open as well as 3 lifts. Hut Run, Tank Hill and magic carpet only. They still report 20cm average snow depth and 25cm in man made areas. Road is open and clear at time of report but very icy in the top car park.

Remember chains are still required to be carried by law.

Hard work pays off

Mt Baw Baw staff have been hard at work, patching, repairing and generally holding the snow together under tough conditions. Over the last week the total has dropped due to rain but they have managed it very well and can still offer 5/7 lifts, 2 toboggan runs as well as some awesome cross country skiing on a 25cm average base.

St Gwinear is getting a bit iffy. 10cm at the car park yesterday and both toboggan runs open but......they are getting patchy at the bottom. Little kids are still going to love it and there is plenty of snow for cross country skiing and snowplay from the car park and beyond.

Saturday rain

Word just in that Baw Baw has received a bit of rain overnight. Reports still say over 30cm of snow. 5/7 lifts are turning on a soft base. Road is open and clear. top of 4 degrees today and drizzle expected so rug up.

Expect similar conditions at St Gwinear. It rained heavily yesterday but everyone returned wet but smiling. Unsure of condition of toboggan runs but should (CROSSES FINGERS) hold up for the weekend enough for little ones. Cross country trails still have plenty of cover.

Fresh Snow

That's right.......12cm of fresh snow overnight. What more can I say? Fitting chains today. Fresh tracks to be made. AWESOME.

5/7 lifts turning, toboggan runs open, cross country trails in action, huskies in the snow. Perfect weekend coming up
